Wimbledon 2017

17/07/2017

Wimbledon took 2017 by storm and provided some great sound bites and media coverage that really brings the sport into a fantastic light and peaks interest in a huge variety of people with varying interest levels in the sport.

From the little ones who are keener to take up the bat in the local park, to those with mild interest who it pushes to finally make it out on to the road to a live event, to those who are in training and it spurs them on the really push to make it to that next level.

Having an event like this, held here in the UK is a fantastic benefit to us all.

A quick rundown of the Wimbledon 2017 winners:

This year saw Garbine Muguruza go up against Venus Williams to take the women’s single home.

Roger Federer came up trumps with his eight win in the men’s singles.

Melo and Kubot made a dream team to take the men’s doubles.

The women’s doubles showed Vesnina and Makarova to be a fine pair to be reckoned with and the mixed doubles also put in a fine performance with the Murray and Hingis taking the final.

This year also shone a bit of light on equality in the game as Murray politely corrected a reporter who casually forgot about the American Women champions when discussing Querrey’s success against him leading him to be the first [MALE] Major semi-final since 2009.

It’s been deemed ‘casual sexism’ in the media and Murray’s polite highlighting of the act is a great example of how our sporting mentors/heroes can have a beneficial cultural impact as a circumstances in their sporting success.

Among others the American female players have had some fantastic achievements, Serena Williams actually won 12 Grand Slam tournaments for example.
